Facility Coding:

This is an introductory to intermediate level coding course for students who are interested in becoming certified to code for hospitals. Instruction is split into six modules. These include: Module I - Overview of hospital coding to include payment methodologies, compliance and HIPAA; Module II – The medical record, which includes documentation, data sets and legal aspects of record-keeping; Module III – Inpatient diagnosis coding; Module IV – Coding systems to include ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, DSM and SNOMED; Module V – Hospital procedural coding to include ICD-9 Volume III; Module VI – Hospital outpatient coding.  Heavy emphasis is placed on diagnosis coding for DRG assignment. The student should be able to complete this 50-hour course within 6 months. One textbook is required for this course.

 

Physician Coding:

This course is an intermediate to advanced coding course for students who are interested in becoming certified physician coders. ICD-9, CPT and HCPCS coding are covered in detail along with real-life coding scenarios. Twenty-two chapters cover ICD-9 and CPT coding equally; in addition to fraud and abuse, compliance, and revenue cycle/billing information. The student should be able to complete this 80-hour course within ten months. One textbook is required for this course, which is approved by the AAPC.
